With the theme “Be a Centralian A.S.S.E.T.: Accountability to Self, Society, Environment Today and Beyond,” Central Philippine University celebrates the University Day 2018 in various venues inside the CPU Campus from September 17-29, 2018.
In sports, literary, and musical competitions, Centralians showcased their skills and talents highlighting the Central Spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. The English literary contests, namely—oration, extemporaneous speech, declamation, and character interpretation—and the Filipino literary events—declamation, oration, extemporaneous speech, and binalaybay—were held at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park.

Simultaneously, the musical competitions—male quartet, women’s trio, and others—were held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium.
Aside from these, Centralians could still look forward to more exciting events, such as the Mr. and Ms. CPU’s Talent Night on September 21, 2018 at the Rose Memorial Auditorium and the crowning of Mr. and Ms. CPU 2018 during the pageant night on September 25, 2018 at the same venue.
A battle of the words will also ensue on September 25, 2018 as the top colleges and units compete for the debate finals.

On September 27, 2018, the University Picnic will be held around different venues in the campus. The Street Dance Competition, the Battle of the Bands and the Folk Dance Competition will also be held on the same day.
The CPUAAI also invites all CPU alumni to the 2018 Alumni Homecoming and General Assembly on September 29, 2018, 8:30 AM at the Rose Memorial Auditorium. The Alumni Night will be held at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel on September 29, 2018, 7:00 PM. On the other hand, CPU’s 113th Foundation Day Memorial Service will be held at the Philippine-American Cemetery on October 1, 2018, 6:00 AM.
With the theme, “Fostering CPU’s Legacy: Let the Central Spirit Shine,” let us proclaim the goodness of the Lord in our university and His favour in our lives.
The foot parade is one the most awaited events of the U-Day.
Excitement has taken over as students, faculty, and staff work towards the University Day season. The kick-off is tentatively scheduled on September 3, 2018. The U-Day celebrations are organized by the U-Day Steering Committee in coordination with the CPU Republic.
“Be an A.S.S.E.T. (Accountable to Self, Society and Environment Today and Beyond),” is the U-Days’ theme which suggests creative contribution and cooperation of individuals so that everyone could become an asset.
The intramurals will begin at 2:00 PM on September 3 with an opening ceremony at the Alumni Promenade and Concert Park. After which, the Sports Parade will follow. The aquathlon will then be the opening event. Ball games will start on September 10 at designated areas. Most of the literary-musical competitions will be held at the Promenade and Rose Memorial Auditorium on the said month.
An ode to culture and the arts – the different competitions provide platforms for Centralians to showcase their God-given talents.
One of the most-awaited events of the celebration is the Mr. & Miss CPU Pageant to be held on September 25. This event and its corresponding activities are being orchestrated by the Mr. & Miss CPU Committee, co-chaired by Ms. Crista Huyong and Miss Carmelle Frances Romero. For the CPU Alumni, the most awaited event is the Homecoming Celebration on September 29. The full-packed day will begin with Alumni Morning Devotional at the RMA, followed by a fellowship lunch. The celebration will continue with the Alumni Night at the Grand Xing Hotel, Iloilo City. This year’s Alumni Homecoming theme is “Fostering CPU’s Legacy: Let the Central Spirit Shine.”

CPU takes root in the Christian spirit of the Baptist missionaries who gave scholarships to dedicated and hard-working young Filipinos.
Celebrating its history of producing exemplary Christian scholars—The Central Philippine University Student Development Programs held its annual Scholarship Awarding and Recognition Program at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park on August 6, 2018.
The event aimed at recognizing the various individuals, families, and private and public institutions that have benevolently supported thousands of Centralians for many years and counting.
The invocation was led by Pastor Mary Grace F. Labis, Associate Pastor of the University Church. It was then followed by the singing of the National Anthem with Ms. Crista Huyong.
For the acknowledgement of donors, Dr. Margen A. Java, Director of the Student Development and Programs, thanked the donors for their generous contribution to the education of deserving and hard-working Centralians, “Indeed, Central Philippine University is privileged and blessed because every year we have new and continuing donors. This year we have 529 new scholars and grantees.” For the welcome remarks, Vice President for Student Affairs, Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, highlighted the spirit of generosity of Centralians and thanked them for giving back to the university.

Central Philippine University Student Republic held its Oath Taking and Turnover Ceremony during the CPUR Night on April 5 at 6 in the evening at the Alumni Promenade and Concert Park. The officers were inducted by Commissioner Rhea Peñaflor from the National Youth Commission.
Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President, shared his expectations from the student officials and members of CPUR. In his message, Dr. Robles mentioned possible changes that the new set of officials could make. He thought that this could be possible if the new officers from different parties can make contributions that would benefit the whole “Republic.”
Commissioner Peñaflor encouraged the new CPUR officials to continue on and improve what the outgoing student administration has started. She enjoined their cooperation despite coming from different political parties.
Dr. Margen Java, Director for Student Development Programs, appreciated the outgoing officers for a “job well done” at coordinating and working successfully with the different campus organizations.

Responsibilities of the outgoing CPUR officers were turned over to the newly elected student officials. The symbolic Gavel was turned over by outgoing President Jan Christian Española, outgoing Prime Minister Charles Arthel Rey and outgoing Vice President Sidrik Gotico to incoming Vice President Anthony Niguas. The symbolic Mace was turned over by the outgoing Prime Minister to the incoming senators. This school year’s prime minister will still be voted upon by the newly elected senators.
Newly elected CPUR President John Michael Suelo received the Key of Responsibility from Outgoing President Jan Christian Española. In his acceptance speech, Suelo thanked his predecessors for paving the way to progress. “We will formulate more effective programs and projects for the students and the CPUR government.” Suelo also disclosed his plans to the student-citizens of the CPU Student Republic. It includes the strategy they will use to conduct the orientation for the new students and a week-long leadership training of the new CPUR officials. This year’s set of CPUR officers are expected to perform well, with their work student and students’ welfare program.
The CPU Student Republic is the oldest student government organization in the Philippines.

Employment opportunities for all—The Central Philippine University Guidance Services Center and Placement Office in partnership with the Public Employment Service Office, Iloilo Provincial Government, and Department of Labor and Employment Region VI conducted a “Job Fair @ CPU” at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park on March 14, 2018. The whole-day event was aimed at providing work opportunities for graduating Centralians and guests, and also to assist companies and employers in their business needs.
For the welcome remarks, CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles thanked the participating companies for joining this year’s job fair. “This event is not only for graduating Centralians, but also for the different companies joining us today. We are grateful for the positive response and also for the support of the Department of Labor and Employment and the Public Employment Service Office.”

Mr. Joselito De La Banda, Iloilo Head Office, DOLE Region VI thanked CPU for holding the said event. “DOLE is very grateful for today’s activity. I am touched by the gospel about Jesus feeding the 5000, Jesus healing the sick, Jesus feeding the 4000. If today, Jesus is with us, I believe the news tomorrow will be ‘Jesus employs many.’”
On the other hand, Mr. Francisco Heller, PESO Federation President, encouraged young Centralians to make the most of the job fair activity. “There are 2.4 million unemployed people in the Philippines; 953, 964 of them are from the youth sector. Activities like this give young people opportunity to be employed.”
To officially open the event, the ribbon cutting ceremony was led by CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles; Vice President for Student Affairs, Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico; Iloilo Head Office, DOLE Region VI, Mr. Joselito De La Banda; and PESO Federation President, Mr. Francisco Heller.

The Annual Evaluation and Exhibits of Student Campus Organizations aims to showcase CPU’s unity in diversity through the different advocacies. They were awarded as the best organization, special category.
A total of 75 student organizations from CPU participated in the Annual Evaluation and Exhibits of Student Campus Organizations 2018 held last February 8-9 at the Alumni Promenade Concert Park. The student organizations were classified into Academics, Special, Sports, Religious, Cultural and Arts, Municipal/Regional and Fraternity. Each group installed and decorated their kiosks for the judges and bystanders. They displayed admirable cooperation, talent, and determination for their work to be judged as this year’s “best of the best.”
The awards included “Best Student Organization” and “Best Adviser.” An Essay Writing Contest was also included in the events.

The opening celebration started at 2 pm on the first day and was attended by Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico, Vice President for Student Affairs and Co-Chair of Student Organizations Committee and Dr. Florence P. Bogacia, Vice President, Finance and Administration. Other attendees included Dr. Margen A. Java, Director, Student Development Programs and Chair, Student Organizations Committee; Rev. Francis Neil G. Jalando-on, Director, Office of Communications and Member, Student Organizations Committee; Ms. Crista S. Huyong, Coordinator, Cultural Affairs Office; and. Ms. Rouella Cheyenne C. Aberia, Placement Coordinator.
Rev. Gico delivered the inspirational message to the participants while Rev. Jalando-on led the invocation and closing prayers.
Dr. Bogacia and Rev. Gico cut the ceremonial ribbon at the exhibit venue. The rationale of activity, criteria, and judges were read by Dr. Java. The judging started on the first day and continued onto the second day.
With a ranking of 95.07, in the Academic classification, the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. was awarded the overall Best Organization. Their organization got a prize of P10,000.00.
The Library Student Assistants was the best among the Special organizations category with a total ranking percentage of 92.27. The top rank among the Sports organizations category is the Central Philippine University Mountaineering Society from with a ranking 90.9 %. CPU Gospel Team led the religious organization with a rating of 93.47%. CPU Teatro, Sining, Atbp. was best in Cultural and Arts category. The best Municipal/Regional Organization was claimed by Leon Centralians, and the Best Fraternity is Phi Beta Epsilon Fraternity.

In the Essay Writing Contest, the following are the winners: 1st Place, Niegil E. Libo-on, Work Students Organization; 2nd Place, Denise Marie Aldea, CPU Biological Society; 3rd Place: Nestle G. Taala, CPU Gospel Team.
Vice President Gico congratulated the participants and appreciated the event for promoting student-university relations. He also pointed, among other benefits of the activity, the students’ holistic development in their academic and social disciplines.
CPU President, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, encouraged Centralians and partner-organizations to support the advocacies of the Philippine Red Cross.
With the aim of encouraging more volunteers to donate their blood, the Philippine Red Cross Regional Office in partnership with the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation will be holding the Dinagyang Blood Olympics on selected dates this January 2018 at participating schools and universities. The opening program of the said activity was held at CPU Alumni Promenade Concert Park on January 10, 2018.
For the welcome message, Dr. Teodoro C. Robles, CPU President, thanked the Iloilo City Government and the Philippine Red Cross for holding activities that promote the spirit of volunteerism, “We hope that events like this will continue as long as there is a need to help others who need blood donations. I thank the Iloilo City Government, the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, the Philippine Red Cross and all its partners for holding this kind of activity.”
Atty. Dominador C. Co., Executive Assistant to the Mayor, expressed the city’s thanks to the partner-agencies and universities for their support and commitment to the said activity.

Dr. Mae Ann Sta. Lucia, Regional Blood Program Coordinator, Department of Health Region VI, on behalf of Dr. Marlyn Concovar, highlighted the role of youth in keeping the spirit of volunteerism alive, “We encourage the youth to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism, especially to participate in our blood drives. The spirit of volunteerism is very much alive in the provinces of Panay.”
CPU Prime Minister Charles Arthel Rey, in his message, encouraged his fellow youth to develop a heart for community service and empathy, “It is a great honor that the opening of the1st Dinagyang Blood Olympics was held here in our university. We should have a heart of empathy and volunteerism for our fellowman by supporting and promoting causes like this.”

The program began with a prayer, led by CPU Vice President for Student Affair, Rev. Joniel Howard H. Gico. The singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the CPU Hymn followed, both conducted by the Director, CPU Cultural Affairs, Ms. Crista Huyong with the CPU Symphonic Band conducted by Mr. Asuncion O. Bautista.
Also part of the Dinagyang festivities is a special screening of the entries for the short film making contest. The screening will be at Cinematheque Iloilo on January 23, 2018.

The Work-Student Organization (WSO) of Central Philippine University (CPU) put forth its hundred years dictum, “Labor is Honor” when they celebrated their annual celebration of “Dies Felices” last December 22-23, 2017 at CPU High School Gymnasium and Alumni Promenade Concert Park as their venues.
The two-day celebration was planned and organized by the initiative of the WSO officers headed by their president, Ms. Precious Mae Jamola. In her message, Jamola emphasized the significance of the celebration to every work students. “Dies Felices is an annual event of the work student organization which all members of the work student organization participate in. The main objectives of this activity are to provide avenue for its members to acquaint themselves with one another, showcase their talents and to build connection to the work students. It is also very important to realize the mission and vision of the organization.” Ms Jamola said.
The program started with a Sport Fest held at the CPU High School Gym. The four chapters of WSO namely; Clerical Student Assistants (CSA), Janitorial Student Assistants (JSA), Library Student Assistants (LSA) and Services & Laboratories Student Assistants (SLSA) competed in both volleyball and basketball event. The overall victor of the Sport Fest was earned by the SLSA, followed by the CSA as second place, LSA and JSA landed on third and fourth place, respectively. The winners was also given cash awards.
A seminar on “Safety in the Workplace” was conducted on the second day of the Dies Felices celebration with Mr. Prim Vergara, OHS Officer/Technical Assistant to the President, as the resource speaker. Mr. Vergara pointed out in his talk the Japanese way of living. He taught work students the five Japanese words that encompass the Japanese method in harmonizing their workplace; the Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize) and Shitsuke (Sustain).
The highlight of the celebration was the Mr. and Miss Dies Felices held at Alumni Promenade. Dinner was served for everyone before the program started at around 7 pm. It was hosted by Ms. Divine Grace Sorioso and Pastor Alfred Morales. Sixteen candidates (8 males, 8 females), two pairs from each chapters vied to win the crown as Mr. & Miss Dies Felices 2017. The pageant started as each of them displayed their confident poses in their production number followed by their casual wear production. They also walked on stage wearing their formal attire sponsored by Ilonggo fashion designer, Mandy Salcedo after heading to the Q&A portion.

As the president of this organization it filled my heart with great joy and love, knowing that I am a leader of a student body that breaks boundaries”, Jamola remarked.
At the moment Jamola is looking forward for the Dies Felices 2018, “The new set of officers next year will surely do their best to exceed the expectation of the organization’s members. Through the help of the members, officers and adviser, the Dies Felices 2018 will surely a remarkable one”, she added.
